A Day on the Water Turns Tragic

On July 14, 2023, 74-year-old Ontonagon resident, Dale Venema, embarked on a kayaking excursion on Lake Superior near the Firesteel River area in Ontonagon Township. Known for his love of the outdoors and familiarity with the local waterways, Dale's solo adventure was intended to be a routine outing. However, later that day, a concerned resident spotted his kayak overturned and unoccupied, prompting immediate concern and the initiation of a search operation.

The Intensive Search Efforts

In the days following Dale's disappearance, multiple agencies collaborated in an exhaustive search effort. The Michigan State Police led the operation, with assistance from the Ontonagon County Sheriff's Department, the United States Coast Guard, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and specialized units like Bruce’s Legacy Search and Recovery from Wisconsin.
