On the morning of October 5, 2023, 74-year-old Jay Hegeman, a resident of Islamorada, Florida, embarked on what was intended to be a routine fishing trip. Renting a 20-foot center console boat from Snake Creek Marina around 10 a.m., Hegeman planned to spend the day exploring the waters of the Upper Keys. He was expected to return the vessel by 5 p.m. that evening. The Search Begins
When Hegeman failed to return the rented boat on time, the owner of Reef Marine, the rental company, initiated a search. After checking local establishments with no success, the situation escalated.
