Issei Sagawa was born on April 26, 1949, in Kobe, Japan, into a family of considerable wealth and influence. His father, Akira Sagawa, was a prominent businessman, and his grandfather had a notable position as an editor for The Asahi Shimbun. Sagawa's birth was premature, and he was reportedly small enough to fit in his father's palm. This frail beginning led to various health complications, including enteritis, a disease of the small intestine, which he eventually overcame.
