Early Life and Troubled Beginnings
Barry Michael George was born on April 15, 1960, in Hammersmith, London. As the youngest of three children, his early years were marked by challenges. At 14, George attended Heathermount boarding school in Sunningdale, Berkshire, a school catering to children with emotional and behavioral difficulties. He left school without qualifications and briefly worked as a messenger at the BBC Television Centre, a position that lasted only five months.
George's early adulthood was characterized by a series of impersonations and legal troubles. He adopted various aliases, including Paul Gadd (the real name of singer Gary Glitter), Thomas Palmer, and Steve Majors. In 1980, after a failed attempt to join the Metropolitan Police, he was arrested for impersonating an officer, having obtained false warrant cards. This incident marked the beginning of a pattern of behavior that would later influence public perception of him.
