Born on March 22, 1937, Ida Dean Richardson spent her early years in Florida. At 18, she became pregnant and married Kenneth Gerald Anderson, a part-time musician. The couple relocated to the Detroit area, where they had two more children. Their marriage was fraught with financial difficulties, as evidenced by Ida's letters to her family in Florida.
In February 1958, Ida left Kenneth, taking their three children with her. Shortly thereafter, she was hospitalized due to rheumatic fever and ulcers. During her hospitalization, Kenneth placed the children in a boarding home and moved to Chicago. Consequently, the state of Michigan assumed custody of the children, prompting both parents to engage in a legal battle to regain their parental rights.
Ida was scheduled to regain custody of her children in mid-September 1958. Plans were in place for her and the children to fly to Jacksonville, Florida, to visit family after the court proceedings.
