Early Life: A Troubled Beginning
John Edward Robinson was born on December 27, 1943, in Cicero, Illinois. He was the third of five children in a household marked by dysfunction; his father, Henry, was an abusive alcoholic, while his mother, Alberta, was a strict disciplinarian. Despite these challenges, Robinson showed early promise. At 13, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and even traveled to London to perform before Queen Elizabeth II as part of a scouting program .
However, his academic journey was fraught with difficulties. He enrolled at Quigley Preparatory Seminary in Chicago with aspirations of becoming a priest but was expelled due to poor grades and disciplinary issues. Subsequent attempts at higher education, including studies in medical radiography at Morton Junior College, also ended in failure .
