A Childhood Steeped in Abuse and Neglect
Henry Lee Lucas was born on August 23, 1936, in Blacksburg, Virginia, into a life of extreme hardship and abuse. His mother, Viola, was a violent alcoholic who worked as a prostitute, often forcing young Henry to watch her with clients. His father, Anderson, was a double amputee who struggled with alcoholism and died of hypothermia after a night spent outdoors to escape his wife's wrath. Lucas suffered head injuries and was subjected to disturbing punishments, including being dressed in girls' clothing and beaten regularly. These early experiences contributed to Lucas's troubled psyche and set the stage for his future criminal behavior .
Lucas's education was minimal; he dropped out of school in the sixth grade and began drifting across the country, engaging in petty crimes and developing a pattern of antisocial behavior. His early criminal record included burglary and theft, leading to multiple incarcerations. During this time, he began to exhibit signs of deep psychological disturbances, including necrophilic tendencies and a fascination with violence .
