A Routine Outing Turns Tragic
On February 12, 1999, 21-year-old Marine Lance Cpl. Kenneth Abell embarked on a kayaking trip with two fellow Marines to the Mokulua Islands, situated approximately one mile offshore from Lanikai Beach in Kailua, Hawaii. The group reached one of the islands, and while navigating over rocks near the water's edge, Abell was swept into the ocean by a powerful wave and never resurfaced.
Extensive Search Efforts
