In September 2019, 48-year-old Lucy Schuhmann from Louisville, Kentucky, embarked on a solo vacation to the tranquil island of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Known for its pristine beaches and lush hiking trails, St. John was a fitting destination for Schuhmann, who was described by friends and family as an adventurous spirit with a love for the outdoors. She checked into an Airbnb in the Coral Bay area, planning to explore the island's natural beauty.
Schuhmann was last seen on September 15, 2019. When she failed to check out of her rental as scheduled, the property owner grew concerned and reported her missing on September 19. Her belongings, including luggage, were found untouched in her room, suggesting she had intended to return. This prompted an immediate search by local authorities and the National Park Service.
On September 20, authorities discovered Schuhmann's rented yellow Jeep Wrangler parked at the Salt Pond area of Virgin Islands National Park. Further investigation led to the discovery of her backpack, containing identification, near the edge of a cliff on the Ram Head Trail—a remote and rugged area known for its challenging terrain. Despite the proximity to the cliff, officials noted that the area below consisted mostly of jagged rocks rather than water, making a fatal fall less likely without a trace.
The search for Schuhmann was extensive and multifaceted. Authorities employed scuba divers, snorkelers, and even technical climbing experts to scour the park's diverse landscapes. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted aerial searches, while cadaver dogs were brought in to detect any signs of human remains. The terrain posed significant challenges, with steep, densely vegetated areas and high sea conditions complicating the efforts. Despite these exhaustive measures, no additional evidence was found to shed light on Schuhmann's whereabouts....Read More
