On January 27, 1996, the fishing vessel Pacesetter embarked on a routine crab fishing expedition in the Bering Sea, a region notorious for its treacherous waters and unpredictable weather. Among the seven crew members aboard was 19-year-old Bryon Koesterman from Dillingham, Alaska. Koesterman, along with his fellow crewmen—Captain Matthew Pope, Stephen Mack, Richard Anderson, Michael Ericson, Elias Pena, and Stanley Eftestad—were seasoned fishermen familiar with the perils of the sea.
