On March 12, 2014, Eric Eder, a 43-year-old fisherman from Redmond, Oregon, was aboard the 87-foot fishing vessel Seeker in the Bering Sea, approximately ten miles northwest of Unimak Island, Alaska. What began as a routine fishing expedition quickly turned tragic when Eder fell overboard under circumstances that remain unclear. The incident occurred before 8:00 a.m., and despite immediate search efforts, Eder was not recovered.
The crew of the nearby vessel Seafreeze Alaska alerted the U.S. Coast Guard upon learning of the man overboard. Multiple assets were deployed, including an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Cold Bay and the Coast Guard Cutter Alex Haley. Several Good Samaritan vessels in the vicinity also joined the search. Despite these concerted efforts, the search, which covered approximately 64 square miles over ten hours, yielded no results, and the Coast Guard suspended the operation late that evening.
The Bering Sea is notorious for its treacherous conditions, and on the day of Eder's disappearance, the environment was particularly unforgiving. Reports indicated 10-foot seas, winds reaching up to 40 miles per hour, and freezing temperatures, with the air at 23°F and water at 42°F. Such conditions drastically reduce survival time for individuals in the water without protective gear, often to mere minutes.
Eder was a seasoned fisherman with 17 years of experience in Alaskan waters. He had recently moved to Redmond with his wife, Adrianne, and their two young sons, aged five years and five weeks at the time. Family members described him as a devoted husband and father who had decided to scale back his fishing commitments to spend more time with his family. The news of his disappearance sent shockwaves through the tight-knit fishing communities of Oregon and Alaska, prompting an outpouring of support. ...Read More
