Halloween night in 1992 brought crowds to the streets of downtown Eugene, Oregon. Costumed partygoers moved between house gatherings, bar patrons came and went from the taverns along Washington Street, and people lingered around the basketball courts at Washington-Jefferson Park. Somewhere in the middle of all that activity, late on October 31 or in the earliest hours of November 1, a 31-year-old man named Octaviano Zaragoza was beaten in a narrow alley behind Rick's Down Under tavern at 247 Washington Street. He was found with grave head injuries and later died. More than three decades later, no one has been arrested, no suspect has ever been publicly named, and the Eugene Police Department still lists his killing among its unsolved cold cases.
Octaviano Zaragoza was 31 years old in the fall of 1992. According to the Eugene Police Department, he was without housing at the time of his death. Public records reveal little else about his life: where he grew up, what brought him to Eugene, or who his family members were. That silence is itself part of what makes his case so difficult. People living on the margins of a community are often the least visible when they are alive and the most easily forgotten after they are gone. Yet Eugene investigators have repeatedly returned to his case, keeping his name in front of the public and insisting that his death deserves the same pursuit of justice as any other.
Octaviano was found in the north-south alley behind Rick's Down Under, just east of Washington-Jefferson Park. He had suffered serious injuries to his head. Investigators later determined that he died of blunt force trauma caused by multiple blows to the head, possibly delivered with a piece of wood or another hard object. The location was not a remote or hidden place. It sat at the edge of a busy park and behind a tavern that would have been doing business on one of the most social nights of the year. Whoever attacked him did so within a short distance of many potential witnesses.
When Octaviano was found, his shoes had been taken and his pack had been searched. Those details suggest that robbery was part of what happened in that alley, whether it was the reason for the attack or something that happened after the violence began. Taking the shoes of a man living outside, along with going through the few belongings he carried, points to an act that was both brutal and callous. Police have never publicly said whether they believe one person or several were involved, or whether Octaviano knew the person who attacked him.
Detectives have placed the attack in the late hours of Halloween, October 31, 1992, or the first hour of November 1. That window matters because of everything happening around Washington-Jefferson Park at that time. Halloween parties were underway in nearby homes. Patrons were entering and leaving Rick's Down Under. People were gathered at the park's basketball courts. News coverage of the case has also reported that Octaviano had been at a Halloween party that night before he was found badly beaten. Each of those settings represents a group of people who may have crossed paths with him in his final hours. on Vanished at Sea: The Mysterious Disappearance of Cameron Booth Off Chincoteague's Coast
He was a criminal, an abuser, likely who didn't want to face justice of his actions and took his own life because he could not face the consequences of what he did. The victims have told the family his crimes, with evidence. The family knows he was arrested and convicted of possession of CSAM. They know who and what he was. And they're all so equally sick they live in comfort that the victims don't want to retraumatize themselves over everything he put them through. Dont support this families sick parade of using a monster to get sympathy. He was never ashamed of who he was. He loudly boasted his crimes and justified them. The family shouldn't sit there and pretend, how far from reality are they to sit and post this man publicly on news outlets, websites, knowing who he is. Do they need attention that badly? They don't want the attention from the truth. The victims will never get justice. Do not pray for him o
