On June 29, 1997, Donald Clyle Johnston, a 44‑year‑old man with red hair and blue eyes, boarded a bright yellow-and-white Cessna 182 at Anchorage’s Merrill Field. Accompanying him were his wife, Karen Johnston , and the couple Monte and Linda Parrish—friends who shared what was likely intended as a scenic sightseeing flight over Denali National Park. The group took off without filing a flight plan, a decision that would later hamper search efforts.

Donald Johnston, then 44 years old, stood around 5′10″, weighed approximately 170 lb, and had distinguishing red hair and blue eyes. His wife Karen, aged 41 at the time, was listed at 5′4″ and 130 lb, with blonde hair and blue eyes.
