A Quiet Independence Day That Took a Mysterious Turn

July 4, 2017, began as an ordinary summer holiday for Benjamin "Ben" Smith in Tijeras, New Mexico. The 24-year-old was spending the day with the woman he was living with, the mother of one of his deceased friends. During the afternoon, they shared hot dogs and beer, and everything appeared normal. Those around him later recalled that he was in good spirits and looking forward to attending an Albuquerque Isotopes baseball game followed by Fourth of July fireworks later that evening. Nothing about his behavior suggested that he intended to disappear or abandon the plans he had been anticipating.

The Short Walk That Changed Everything

At approximately 4:00 p.m., Benjamin left the residence near New Mexico Highway 337 and Raven Road, reportedly intending to take a walk to a nearby park. Other accounts place his last known location in the area of Raven Road and Skyland Boulevard. It was supposed to be a brief outing before returning home in time for the baseball game.
