Early Life and Troubled Childhood
Susan Leigh Vaughan Smith was born on September 26, 1971, in Union, South Carolina. Her early years were marked by significant trauma. At the tender age of six, Susan experienced the devastating loss of her father, Harry Vaughan, who died by suicide. This event had a profound impact on her, leading to emotional instability in her formative years.
Following her father's death, Susan's mother, Linda, remarried Beverly C. Russell Jr., a local businessman and prominent member of the Christian Coalition. Tragically, during her teenage years, Susan was subjected to sexual abuse by her stepfather, further compounding her psychological distress. These early experiences of loss and abuse contributed to a pattern of emotional turmoil, including multiple suicide attempts during her adolescence.
