A Memorial Turns Deadly

On May 7, 2017, a peaceful memorial gathering in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood erupted into violence, leaving ten people shot and two dead. Siblings Adriana and Michael Williams, both 27 years old, were among those fatally wounded. The memorial was in honor of Daniel Cardova, a 26-year-old man who had been murdered earlier that day in the same block. As attendees paid their respects near Rockwell Street and 46th Place around 5:15 p.m., two masked assailants emerged from an alley and opened fire with rifles, indiscriminately targeting the crowd. Michael Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, while Adriana succumbed to her injuries shortly after being transported to Stroger Hospital. The other eight victims, ranging in age from 19 to 26, sustained various injuries but survived the attack.

A Day Marred by Violence

The tragic events of that evening were part of a violent chain reaction that began in the early hours of May 7. At approximately 4:30 a.m., Daniel Cardova was found unresponsive between two parked cars on the 2500 block of West 46th Place, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
