A Community Leader's Life Cut Short
On the evening of June 24, 2014, the Brookfield Village neighborhood in East Oakland was shaken by the tragic death of 47-year-old Lanedria Alicia Grant. Known for her dedication to assisting senior citizens, Grant was a beloved figure in her community. Her life was abruptly ended when gunfire erupted around 6:45 p.m. in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue, just a short distance from the Fruitvale BART Station, the site of her nephew Oscar Grant III's fatal shooting in 2009.
A Family Touched by Repeated Tragedy
The Grant family had already endured significant hardship prior to Lanedria's death. Her nephew, Oscar Grant III, was fatally shot by a BART police officer on New Year's Day 2009, an event that sparked widespread protests and discussions about police brutality. Adding to the family's grief, Lanedria's own son was shot and wounded by Oakland police in 2012.
