Introduction
The city of Chicago was shaken to its core on April 20, 2014, when news broke of a tragic incident involving two esteemed members of its law enforcement community. Veronica Rizzo-Acevedo, an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, and her husband, Javier Acevedo, a 25-year veteran corrections officer with the Cook County Sheriff's Department, were found dead in their home in what authorities determined to be a murder-suicide.
The Discovery
In the early hours of that fateful Sunday, a chilling sequence of events unfolded. At approximately 5 a.m., police responded to a 911 call from the Acevedo residence located in the 5300 block of South Austin Avenue, near Midway Airport.
