Introduction

The city of Chicago was shaken to its core on April 20, 2014, when news broke of a tragic incident involving two esteemed members of its law enforcement community. Veronica Rizzo-Acevedo, an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, and her husband, Javier Acevedo, a 25-year veteran corrections officer with the Cook County Sheriff's Department, were found dead in their home in what authorities determined to be a murder-suicide.

The Discovery

In the early hours of that fateful Sunday, a chilling sequence of events unfolded. At approximately 5 a.m., police responded to a 911 call from the Acevedo residence located in the 5300 block of South Austin Avenue, near Midway Airport. Inside, they discovered the lifeless bodies of Veronica and Javier, both with fatal gunshot wounds.
