A Sunday Afternoon Turns Deadly
On October 9, 2016, a typical Sunday afternoon in Birmingham's Kingston neighborhood took a tragic turn. At the corner of Ninth Avenue and 44th Place North, a group of men engaged in a casual dice game. The atmosphere was abruptly shattered when an unidentified assailant opened fire on the gathering. In the chaos that ensued, three individuals sustained gunshot wounds. Among them was 23-year-old Rakim Rashad Hawkins, who was critically injured. All three victims were rushed to UAB Hospital, where Hawkins was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The other two victims survived and were reported to be in stable condition.
The Elusive Perpetrator
Witnesses recounted that the shooter, whose identity remains unknown, fled the scene in a vehicle immediately after the attack. Despite efforts by law enforcement, the motive behind the shooting has not been determined, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
