A Homecoming Turned Tragic

In late March 2013, 19-year-old Jacob Enrique Valdiviezo, a sophomore at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, made a surprise visit to his family in San Francisco during his spring break. Known for his dedication both on the football field as a wide receiver and in the classroom as an economics major, Jacob's unexpected return was a joyous occasion for his loved ones. However, this heartfelt reunion took a devastating turn in the early hours of March 30, 2013. While walking with a friend near his home on Bryant Street, Jacob was approached by an assailant who, after a brief confrontation, fatally shot him. The suspect fled in a gray four-door sedan, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

A Community in Mourning

Jacob's death sent ripples of grief throughout the Mission District and beyond. Hundreds gathered for vigils and memorials, with more than 300 attendees at a candlelight vigil on Bryant Street between 24th and 25th streets. Friends, family, and neighbors shared stories of Jacob's infectious spirit and positive influence.
