A Bright Future Ahead

Simone "CoCo" McKay, a 26-year-old mother of two, was on the cusp of achieving her dreams. As a senior biology major at Chicago State University (CSU), she aspired to attend medical school and dedicate her life to helping others. Balancing her studies with part-time work at the Chicago Public Schools' Office of Early Childhood Education, Simone exemplified determination and resilience. Her friends and classmates at CSU remember her as a caring individual, always ready to offer advice and support. Kristen Gardner, a fellow senior, recalled, "She was somebody you could go to and talk to. She was good at giving advice."

A Tragic Night

In the early hours of October 15, 2017, tragedy struck. Simone was found fatally shot on the front porch of her home in the 9600 block of South Forest Avenue in Chicago's Rosemoor neighborhood. Responding officers discovered her with a gunshot wound to the head; she was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors reported hearing a single gunshot during a thunderstorm, with one stating, "I thought I heard what was a gunshot, and since it’s a thunderstorm going on, I thought maybe it's just thunder."
