In May 2017, 18-year-old Kayla Foster was on the cusp of a significant milestone: her high school graduation from Central High East in Fresno, California. Just two weeks prior, she had attended prom, a memorable evening she shared with her twin brother, Kobe. Opting to make the night even more special, the siblings attended together, capturing the moment with professional photographs. Their grandmother, Cheryl Sumler, recounted, "He had many, many girls he could have taken to the prom with him. But he wanted to take his twin." A Tragic Turn of Events

In the early hours of May 29, 2017, the celebratory atmosphere surrounding Kayla's recent prom took a devastating turn. Around 2:00 a.m., while standing outside a residence near Bardell and Lorena Avenues in Southwest Fresno, Kayla and a group of friends were ambushed in a drive-by shooting. An unidentified assailant fired multiple shots from a moving vehicle into the gathered crowd.
