A Tragic Night in South Chicago
In the early hours of July 27, 2016, the South Chicago neighborhood was shaken by a devastating incident. Africa S. Bass, a 23-year-old mother of two, was walking along the sidewalk in the 8700 block of South Burley Avenue around 12:05 a.m. Suddenly, gunshots rang out from a nearby black SUV, and Bass was struck in the back. Despite being rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, she was pronounced dead at 12:51 a.m.

Bass had recently moved from the Roseland neighborhood to the Germano Millgate Apartments in South Chicago, aiming to provide a safer environment for her children—a 5-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter. She was known for her outspoken nature and unwavering love for her family.
