On May 31, 2016, 15-year-old Fabien Lavinder became the 66th homicide victim in Chicago that month, marking the deadliest May the city had experienced since 1995. Fabien, a resident of Chicago's South Side, was known for his bright smile and aspirations for a better future. He had no criminal record and was not affiliated with any gang, making his untimely death all the more perplexing and tragic.
The Fateful Night
The evening of Fabien's death unfolded with chilling abruptness. He was seated in a gray sedan on the 2900 block of East 89th Street when an assailant emerged from a nearby alley and fired shots into the vehicle. One bullet struck Fabien in the chest. His friends, desperate to save him, rushed him to Advocate Trinity Hospital.
