In the early weeks of 2014, the city of Oakland, California, witnessed a heart-wrenching tragedy that left a mother bereft of her two sons within a span of just 19 days. Dinyal New, a resident of East Oakland, first endured the loss of her 13-year-old son, Lee Weathersby III, on New Year's Eve. Before she could begin to process this unimaginable grief, her 19-year-old son, Lamar Broussard, was also murdered, compounding her sorrow and leaving a community in shock.

On December 31, 2013, young Lee was returning home from a party at the Boys & Girls Club on International Boulevard. As he walked near 104th Avenue and Walnut Street around 9:30 p.m., gunshots rang out, striking the eighth-grader. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Lee succumbed to his injuries early the next day.
