Sharon Ann Pulley was more than just a name in the New Orleans education system; she was a beacon of hope and dedication. Born and raised in the city, Sharon committed her life to nurturing young minds. She served as a kindergarten teacher in the Orleans Parish School System and later at the James M. Singleton Charter School, operated by the Dryades YMCA in Central City. After retiring in 2014, her passion for education drew her back to the classroom in March 2017, where she took on the role of a reading interventionist, assisting students facing academic challenges .
Colleagues remember Sharon as a selfless individual who always prioritized her students' needs. "She never told you no. She always went out of her way for the kids," remarked Catrina Reed, CFO of the Dryades YMCA. Sharon's commitment extended beyond the classroom, as she was known to support her students in various aspects of their lives, embodying the true spirit of an educator .
On the evening of April 18, 2017, tragedy struck the Gentilly neighborhood. Around 9:17 p.m., Sharon Pulley, her 38-year-old niece Nicole Pulley, and her fiancé, 61-year-old Thomas Brumfield, were victims of a brutal shooting at Sharon's residence on the 2200 block of Athis Street. As Sharon and Nicole approached the home's front door, an unidentified assailant emerged from behind and opened fire. Sharon was pronounced dead at the scene, while Nicole and Thomas sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to a local hospital .
The suddenness and violence of the attack left the community in shock. Neighbors recounted hearing a rapid succession of gunshots, with one stating, "We were just watching TV, and then all of a sudden we heard a sequence of shots like 10 shots. Just, 'Bam, bam, bam, bam'" ....Read More
