A Promising Young Life Cut Short
On May 31, 2015, the Tampa community was shaken by the tragic loss of 14-year-old Edward James Harris IV, affectionately known as EJ. While walking home from playing basketball at Woodland Terrace Park, EJ was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting, just a block away from his residence on Diana Street. The incident occurred in broad daylight, around 4:20 p.m., leaving the community in shock and mourning the untimely death of a promising young life.
A Troubling Pattern of Violence
EJ's tragic death was not an isolated incident in his young life. In October 2014, he witnessed a stabbing and, demonstrating courage, cooperated with law enforcement, leading to an arrest. Months later, in January 2015, while playing basketball at a local community center, EJ was robbed at gunpoint, resulting in another arrest. In April 2015, he survived an attempt on his life when he was shot at five times but miraculously remained unharmed.
