On the night of January 11, 2017, Walter "Pooh Man" Sterling Sr., a 45-year-old father of twelve, was tragically shot and killed in New Orleans, Louisiana. The incident occurred near the intersection of St. Bernard Avenue and Marais Street, where Sterling was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds around 10:40 p.m. Despite efforts by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Among Sterling's children is Lamar Peters, who was a freshman point guard for Mississippi State University's basketball team at the time of his father's death. Peters received the devastating news shortly after speaking with his father earlier that day. Despite the tragedy, Peters chose to play in a game against Texas A&M just three days later, channeling his grief into performance. He stated, "I knew what he wanted me to do. He wanted me to go out there and play hard." Peters' determination and strength during this period were widely recognized and admired.
