On the night of January 11, 2017, Walter "Pooh Man" Sterling Sr., a 45-year-old father of twelve, was tragically shot and killed in New Orleans, Louisiana. The incident occurred near the intersection of St. Bernard Avenue and Marais Street, where Sterling was found unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds around 10:40 p.m. Despite efforts by emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has not publicly disclosed any suspects or motives, and the case remains unsolved.
Known affectionately as "Pooh Man," Sterling was deeply rooted in his community. He left behind his devoted wife, Sparkle Sterling, and twelve children: Sun'shyne, Rondell, Skyi, Montrell, LaKia, Waldrika, Nathan, John, Walter Jr., Lamar, Wal'Janae, Kobe, and Willow. His obituary reflects a man cherished by a large extended family and numerous friends. Sterling's life was celebrated in a funeral service held at the Next Generation of Original Morning Star Baptist Church on January 21, 2017.
Among Sterling's children is Lamar Peters, who was a freshman point guard for Mississippi State University's basketball team at the time of his father's death. Peters received the devastating news shortly after speaking with his father earlier that day. Despite the tragedy, Peters chose to play in a game against Texas A&M just three days later, channeling his grief into performance. He stated, "I knew what he wanted me to do. He wanted me to go out there and play hard." Peters' determination and strength during this period were widely recognized and admired.
Sterling's murder is one of many unsolved cases in New Orleans, a city that has long grappled with high rates of violent crime. The NOPD continues to investigate, utilizing forensic techniques and seeking information from potential witnesses. However, like many other incidents, the case has yet to be resolved, leaving Sterling's family and community without closure. ...Read More
