Born and raised in Chicago's gang-influenced Back of the Yards neighborhood, Abner Garcia was no stranger to the challenges his community faced. After graduating from Curie High School, he chose a path of service by enlisting in the United States Army, which led him to Anchorage, Alaska. Upon completing his military tenure, Abner returned to Chicago with a mission to effect positive change. He enrolled at the University of Illinois at Chicago, pursuing a degree in criminal justice with the aspiration of joining the Chicago Police Department. Beyond academics, Abner became a mentor with the YMCA's Urban Warriors program, dedicating himself to guiding at-risk youth away from the perils of gang involvement. His commitment to his community was unwavering, as he worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between veterans and the younger generation, fostering resilience and hope.

On the evening of August 13, 2016, 23-year-old Abner Garcia was driving near his home in Chicago's Garfield Ridge neighborhood.
