Background of the Incident
On October 2, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas, 17-year-old Erik Cantu was shot multiple times by then-San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officer James Brennand. The incident occurred in a McDonald's parking lot, where Cantu was sitting in his vehicle eating a hamburger. Officer Brennand approached the vehicle, suspecting it to be stolen due to mismatched license plates, and opened the driver's side door without identifying himself as a police officer. As Cantu attempted to reverse the vehicle, Brennand fired his weapon multiple times, striking Cantu.
Immediate Aftermath and Medical Condition
Following the shooting, Cantu was critically injured and placed on life support. He sustained injuries to his stomach, diaphragm, lungs, liver, and arm. Doctors removed three bullets, while a fourth remained lodged near his heart.
