On April 25, 1994, the tight-knit community of DeLand, Florida, was forever changed by a tragic event. Fifteen-year-old Laralee Spear, a vibrant and accomplished student at DeLand High School, was abducted and murdered shortly after stepping off her school bus. Her lifeless body was discovered near a burned-down house, a mere quarter-mile from her family home on Deerfoot Road. Despite exhaustive investigations spanning three decades, Laralee's killer remains unidentified, leaving her family and community in a state of unresolved grief.
The Day of the Disappearance
Laralee's routine on that fateful day mirrored countless others. She disembarked from her school bus around 3:15 p.m. at the intersection of Deerfoot Road and South Spring Garden Avenue, intending to make the short walk home. When she failed to arrive, her mother, Barbara Spear, grew alarmed and contacted authorities at approximately 4:05 p.m. The swift response from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office led to the discovery of Laralee's body at 5:35 p.m., behind an abandoned, fire-damaged house near her home.
