On the morning of October 28, 2017, the quiet of New Orleans' West Laverne Drive was shattered by gunfire. At approximately 9:11 a.m., officers from the New Orleans Police Department's Seventh District responded to reports of shots fired in the area. Upon arrival, they discovered 49-year-old Gregory Hilliard inside a white vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts, Hilliard was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a tragic end to a life known for community involvement and kindness.
Gregory Hilliard was more than just a name in a police report; he was a beloved member of his community. Known for his dedication to keeping his neighborhood clean and safe, Hilliard often picked up trash and mowed lawns, embodying the spirit of community service. His obituary reflects a man deeply connected to his family and community, survived by his children, stepchildren, siblings, and grandchildren. His funeral services were held at New Home Ministries in New Orleans, where friends and family gathered to honor his memory.
Surveillance footage from the area provided a crucial lead in the investigation. A black Nissan Maxima was seen approaching Hilliard's vehicle, from which multiple shots were fired. The Maxima then fled northbound on West Laverne Drive, turning onto Wales Street and then onto Downman Road. Notably, the vehicle had a sunroof with a guard, a paper license plate, and a malfunctioning passenger-side brake light. Despite these details, the vehicle and its occupants have never been located.
In the years since Hilliard's murder, no arrests have been made, and the case remains unsolved. The lack of new information has left his family and community in a state of unresolved grief, yearning for justice. The New Orleans Police Department continues to seek information from the public, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111 or toll-free at 1-877-903-STOP. ...Read More
