In late September 2015, the community of Spanaway, Washington, was confronted with a poignant reminder of lives that sometimes go unnoticed. The body of a 77-year-old man, Roy Marvin Pillsbury, was discovered, marking the beginning of what would become a unique case for the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office. Identified under Namus ID: UCP5410, Roy Pillsbury had passed away due to natural causes in the care of Good Samaritan Hospital. Despite the thoughtful efforts made by the PCMEO to track down any living relatives of Mr. Pillsbury, none could be located.
Following standard procedures in such cases, Roy Pillsbury's remains were sent to a local rotation funeral home, where he was respectfully cremated. The cremains were then returned to the custody of the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office. As they held the solemn responsibility of deciding the final resting place for this unclaimed individual, they sought a dignified conclusion to Roy's story.
It was discovered that Roy Marvin Pillsbury was a veteran, and because of his service to the country, he earned the right to be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery. In an honorable gesture befitting a man who served the nation, the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office released his cremains on April 8, 2015, to the Missing In America Project. This organization is dedicated to ensuring that unclaimed veterans receive the recognition and burial they deserve. Thus, Roy Pillsbury, in spite of his solitary end, was laid to rest among fellow servicemen and women, ensuring his legacy and service were respectfully acknowledged.
