On October 17, 2014, in Tacoma, Washington, the body of a man named Leo Edward Hoffner was discovered. He was brought to Tacoma General Hospital, where he ultimately passed away of natural causes. Despite efforts by the hospital staff to locate any next of kin for Mr. Hoffner, they were unable to find anyone who could claim his remains. This prompted a further next-of-kin search by the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office, which also proved unsuccessful.
