On July 18, 1994, the remains of Ian McFarland Shepard were discovered in a railroad boxcar in Santa Clara, California. The boxcar had been transported from Oakland, intended for salvage or destruction. Shepard's body, found within this neglected, transient space, opened an investigation headed by the Santa Clara Police Department to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death and identify any surviving relatives or associates who might come forward to claim him.
