In the early morning hours of May 7, 2024, a building maintenance worker in Los Angeles, California, became concerned after being unable to reach a resident, Josephina Sarmiento Cornejo. The worker noted a foul odor and observed flies near the door of her apartment, prompting them to call 911 for a wellness check.
