In the late afternoon quiet of a Clinton, Missouri neighborhood on August 27, 2022, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 28-year-old Ashton Christine Alexander. A female resident of the peaceful community, her life was cut short inside her own home on East Louise Avenue.
Events of that fateful day suggest a volatile situation that spiraled out of control.
A neighbor reported seeing Ashton's husband, 27-year-old Ryan Wayne Alexander, leave their residence in a hurry, driving off 'like a bat out of hell,' indicative of a heated argument. He returned a short time later, and soon after he re-entered the home, the sound of gunshots pierced the air at approximately 5:00 p.m., an event captured by a neighbor's surveillance audio.
It wasn't until about 6:15 p.m., more than an hour after the shots were fired, that Ryan Alexander himself placed a 911 call, reporting that he had shot his wife. When Clinton Police Officers arrived at the scene, they found Ashton Alexander deceased in the living room, just inside the front door. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, with evidence suggesting she had been shot at least seven times in the face at close range. The scene indicated a brutal and personal attack; gunpowder burns were present, and damage to a metal vent beneath her head suggested she was lying on her back when at least one of the shots was fired.
Investigators found four shell casings near Ashton's body and another five in a kitchen trash can. When questioned by police, Ryan Alexander exhibited signs of intoxication, with a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. He reportedly admitted to jail staff upon his arrest that he had been drinking vodka and beer in the hours leading up to the shooting. He declined to take a field sobriety test and requested an attorney.
Ryan Wayne Alexander was arrested and taken to the Henry County Detention Center, where he was held on a 24-hour investigative hold. Subsequently, the Henry County Prosecuting Attorney's Office filed formal charges against him for first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was held without bond.
