Marshal Gustive H. Schwake, aged 64, tragically lost his life on September 23, 1903, in North Vernon, Indiana. Marshal Schwake was responding to a domestic disturbance call when he was fatally shot. The incident began when the suspect, under the influence of alcohol, engaged in a violent quarrel with his wife. As the altercation escalated, the suspect attempted to kill his wife with a knife. She managed to flee towards a neighbor's house, prompting a passer-by to summon Marshal Schwake.
