On an April evening in 1987, the life of 45-year-old Indiana State Police Sergeant John Edward Hatfull was tragically cut short in Posey County. A dedicated officer with over 14 years of service, he was leading an Emergency Response Team to a rural residence on Tile Factory Road where a man had barricaded himself inside, threatening suicide. The situation had already stretched on for several hours, a tense standoff with a volatile and armed individual.
As the leader of the team, Sergeant
Hatfull made the courageous decision to enter the home in an attempt to resolve the dangerous impasse. It was during this breach that the suicidal man, who was home on a work-release program, opened fire with a shotgun. Sergeant Hatfull was struck by the gunfire, sustaining a fatal wound.
The immediate aftermath was chaotic. The wounded sergeant was quickly airlifted to Welborn Hospital in Evansville, but his injuries were too severe, and he died about an hour later. The 47-year-old man who had fired the fatal shot then took his own life, bringing the tragic standoff to a grim conclusion. No arrests were made as the sole suspect was deceased.
In recognition of his bravery and ultimate sacrifice, Sergeant Hatfull was posthumously promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, a unique honor within the Indiana State Police. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, he was survived by his wife and two children. His legacy is remembered, and in 2013, a bridge on Interstate 64 in Posey County was dedicated as the Sergeant John E. Hatfull Memorial Bridge.
