A retired employee of Cummins Engine and a dedicated member of the Austin Christian Church, he was a man who cherished God, his church, and his family. His life came to a tragic and abrupt end on November 7, 2015, when he was fatally shot during a robbery at his shop.
On that Saturday, a man and a woman visited Turner's store three times.
On the final visit, the woman waited outside in a van while the man went inside. It was during this time that the man shot John Turner in the head, then proceeded to steal cash and other items from the store before fleeing. The violent act sent shockwaves through the small town, leaving friends and family to mourn the loss of a beloved community member.
The investigation into the murder led police to 22-year-old Matt Caudill and his girlfriend, Ginger Cox. Investigators determined that Caudill was the individual who entered the store and shot Turner, while Cox acted as the getaway driver. Both were subsequently arrested and faced charges for their roles in the robbery and murder.
In August 2016, Matt Caudill pleaded guilty to the murder of John Turner. As a result of his plea, he was sentenced to 85 years in prison for his role as the triggerman in the deadly robbery. His girlfriend, Ginger Cox, who waited in the van during the commission of the crime, was sentenced to 35 years in prison for her involvement. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for the senseless killing of a man remembered for his kindness and devotion to his family and faith.
