In the late summer of 2016, the life of 37-year-old Jonie Snider, a White/Caucasian female from Franklin, Indiana, came to a tragic and abrupt end. On the morning of August 13, a man out to watch deer near Camp Atterbury stumbled upon a grim scene. A pickup truck was parked off the road, and nearby in the grass lay the bodies of a man and a woman. When his calls to them went unanswered, he approached and discovered the presence of blood, prompting an immediate call to emergency services.
Johnson County Sheriff's Department deputies and medical personnel who arrived on the scene confirmed that both individuals were deceased. The victims were soon identified as Jonie Snider and 49-year-old Gregory McCray, also of Franklin. Investigators at the scene quickly suspected the incident was a murder-suicide. Evidence suggested that McCray had shot Snider before turning the gun on himself. A firearm was recovered at the location, strengthening this initial theory.
The investigation extended to a home in the 100 block of Countryview in Franklin, where both Snider and McCray had lived. A search warrant was executed at the residence, and evidence gathered there further supported the conclusion that the tragic event was a murder-suicide. An autopsy later confirmed that Jonie Snider's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
As Gregory McCray was identified as the sole perpetrator in Jonie Snider's death, there were no further arrests or suspects pursued by law enforcement. The case was consequently closed, concluding a harrowing event that left friends and family to mourn the violent loss of a mother, daughter, and sister.
