In the small community of Campbellsburg, Indiana, a day of family recreation turned into a tragedy, ending the life of 14-year-old Rex William Pruett. On Sunday, January 21, 2018, the young man, known to friends and family as 'Rexy,' was fatally wounded by a gunshot. The incident occurred in the afternoon as Rex, his father, and his 16-year-old sister were getting ready for some target practice with handguns.
While his father was momentarily distracted by a phone call, a. 22 caliber revolver in the hands of his sister unintentionally discharged, striking Rex. Realizing the gravity of the situation in their remote location, his father quickly loaded his son into his vehicle to rush him to the nearest hospital. Despite these efforts, Rex William Pruett was pronounced dead at St. Vincent Salem Hospital.
Born on January 9, 2004, in Bloomington, Indiana, Rex was a seventh-grade student at Orleans Junior High School. He was remembered as a vivacious young man who had a love for the outdoors, often found riding four-wheelers, swimming, and working outside with his family. He also enjoyed shooting and playing video games.
Indiana State Police investigated the shooting and determined it to be a tragic accident. Investigators found no evidence of foul play in the events leading to Rex's death. Consequently, no arrests were made, and no charges were filed in connection with the incident. The community mourned the loss of the young boy, with funeral services held later that week, and he was laid to rest in Saltillo Cemetery.
