In the summer of 2019, the life of 17-year-old Darnell A. Tobar II was tragically cut short in South Bend, Indiana. A student at Washington High School, Tobar was known for his love of family, friends, basketball, and fishing. His sudden death on June 19, 2019, left his community in mourning. The young man was fatally wounded in a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Woodhill Lane.

A day after the shooting, a 16-year-old male from South Bend turned himself into the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit. The juvenile was cooperative with investigators and was subsequently arrested on preliminary suspicion of reckless homicide. He was then detained at the St. Joseph County Juvenile Justice Center.
