James King, who served as the Chief of Police in Stonega, Virginia, met a tragic end on July 24, 1903. He was shot and killed on Black Mountain, near the Virginia-Kentucky border, while attempting to arrest a well-known moonshiner. A warrant had been issued for the suspect, and Chief King was tasked with serving it. When Chief King confronted the suspect at his home, the man requested to go inside to get his shoes.
