James Morefield, a 45-year-old Deputy Sheriff from Gate City, Virginia, tragically lost his life on April 5, 1908. He was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for two murders in West Virginia. Morefield had received information that the suspect was working at a railroad camp near Speer's Ferry. Acting on this tip, he obtained a warrant and deputized three citizens to assist him in the arrest.
