In the early morning hours of February 16, 2013, a quiet home in the Prospect area of Prince Edward County, Virginia, became the scene of a fatal home invasion. Carl Wayne Saunders Jr., a 29-year-old male, along with 37-year-old Albert Lorenzo Johnson, broke into a residence off Route 460. The homeowner, a 25-year-old father, was asleep inside with his two-year-old son when he was awakened by a loud crash.
Arming himself with a handgun, the homeowner confronted the two intruders.
An exchange of gunfire erupted, lasting less than a minute. In the ensuing chaos, Saunders was shot and killed inside the home, while Johnson was fatally wounded and collapsed on the front lawn. The homeowner was not injured in the shootout, and authorities later confirmed he acted in self-defense and would not face any charges.
A third suspect, who was believed to have been waiting in a nearby vehicle, managed to flee the scene. The Prince Edward County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation to identify and apprehend this individual. Law enforcement utilized search dogs in an attempt to track the escaped suspect, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The bodies of Saunders and Johnson were transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Richmond for autopsy. No further arrests in connection with the home invasion have been publicly reported.
