In the early hours of a Saturday in June 2013, a domestic disturbance call led to the untimely death of 21-year-old Gregory Allen Rosson Jr. of Crozet, Virginia. On June 8, 2013, Albemarle County police responded to a 911 call regarding a domestic situation at a residence on Route 250 in Afton. Upon arrival at approximately 2:16 a.m., the responding officer witnessed a female being assaulted outside the home.
Events escalated quickly when Rosson reportedly ran towards the officer.
The officer discharged his weapon, and Rosson was fatally wounded at the scene. His body was later transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for an autopsy. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to lead the inquiry into the officer-involved shooting, a standard procedure for such incidents. An internal administrative review was also conducted by the Albemarle County Police Department, and the officer involved was placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
Following the investigation into the shooting, the officer's actions were deemed justified. Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorney Denise Lunsford later announced that the officer would not face any charges in the fatal shooting of Rosson. The investigation concluded that the officer acted in self-defense. No arrests were made, and no suspects were sought in connection to the death of Gregory Rosson.
