A student at Liberty University poised to graduate with a degree in Business Administration, Jennifer was a server at IHOP and a mother to two sons. Her aspirations and daily life were abruptly cut short by an act of gun violence that unfolded within her own residence.
The tragic events of that afternoon occurred while her two sons, aged fourteen and seven, were present in the house. The older son later recounted hearing arguing between his mother and Cordell Lionel Carter, a man with whom Jennifer had been in an intermittent romantic relationship. The argument was followed by a loud noise, described as a 'boom or something dropped.' Shortly after, Carter emerged from the bedroom, made a comment to the children about an ambulance, and departed from the home.
An investigation into Jennifer's death led to the arrest of Cordell Lionel Carter. He was subsequently charged and went to trial, where a jury convicted him of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a homicide. During the trial, Carter claimed that he had acted in self-defense, alleging that Jennifer had pulled a gun on him. He testified that he hit her hand, causing the gun to go off.
