In the quiet community of Powhatan County, Virginia, the life of 48-year-old John Rafter Jr. came to a violent and tragic end on December 9, 2016. A Capital One employee and father of three, he was discovered deceased in his home by his 13-year-old son. The young boy had woken up late for school and went to his father's room, only to find a horrific scene.
His father was in bed with a fatal shotgun wound to the head.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding John's death were unclear, and the possibility of suicide was considered. An antique shotgun was found on the bed, and a hatchet was discovered hidden beneath the pillow, suggesting John may have feared for his safety. However, the medical examiner's investigation concluded that the wound and other evidence were not consistent with a self-inflicted injury, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. The nature of the close-range shotgun blast, the length of the weapon, and the trigger mechanism made it unlikely for him to have shot himself.
The investigation into John's murder soon focused on his estranged wife, Karina Rafter. The couple was in the midst of a contentious divorce and a bitter custody battle over their children. Friends of John reported that he had expressed fears for his safety leading up to his death. The couple had a history of domestic issues, with Karina Rafter having a prior conviction for assaulting her husband in 2015.
After a lengthy investigation, Karina Rafter was arrested in February 2019. She was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. During her trial in October 2019, prosecutors presented evidence that they argued pointed to her as the sole individual with the motive, means, and opportunity to kill her husband. Despite her not guilty plea, the jury found her guilty, and she was sentenced to 23 years in prison for the murder of her estranged husband.
