In December of 2017, the community of Wytheville, Virginia, was shaken by the tragic death of 17-year-old Aidan Scott Dawson, a male Caucasian. A senior at George Wythe High School, Aidan was known for his love of football and motocross, his artistic talent, and a smile that could light up a room. The circumstances of his death unfolded after he was reported missing, leading to a grim discovery that would impact many lives.
Following a tip, investigators were led to a property in Draper,
VA, on December 5, 2017. There, they found the bodies of Aidan and another man, 24-year-old Raymond Rodriguez, near an outbuilding. Both men had been shot, and their deaths were quickly classified as a double homicide. The investigation suggested the victims and the alleged perpetrators were acquainted, and a possible motive was related to drugs.
The Wythe County Sheriff's Office moved swiftly, and three teenage suspects were arrested in connection with the murders. Dylan Alexander McGlothlin, who was 18 at the time, faced the most severe charges, including two counts of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Two other teens, 19-year-old Jared Stephens and 18-year-old Hunter Armbrister, were charged as accessories after the fact, with Armbrister also facing charges for the attempted disposal of a body.
Ultimately, Dylan McGlothlin pleaded guilty to the murders of Aidan Dawson and Raymond Rodriguez. In a plea deal that was approved by the victims' families, he avoided a potential death penalty and was sentenced to two life sentences plus an additional 16 years in prison. The other two suspects were scheduled for their own trials. The case left a lasting scar on the community, a painful reminder of the loss of two young men.
